A major tragedy has struck the final day of the Dubai Airshow, one of the world’s premier aviation events, after an Indian Air Force (IAF) Tejas fighter jet crashed during its afternoon aerial demonstration. The pilot has been confirmed dead.
The accident, which occurred at the Al Maktoum International Airport venue, cast a sombre shadow over the conclusion of the prestigious five-day showcase.
The Crash: What We Know
- Time of Incident: The Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, a lightweight, single-engine fighter, crashed around 2:10 PM local time (GST) on Friday, November 21, shortly after take-off and while attempting an aerial display.
- The Scene: Eyewitnesses reported seeing the jet fail to gain altitude before crashing within seconds. The impact resulted in a massive fireball and a plume of thick black smoke that rose over the airfield, causing panic among the spectators, which included families and children.
- Immediate Response: Emergency and firefighting teams responded rapidly to the crash site. The Dubai Airshow immediately halted all aerial displays, and visitors were directed back to the exhibition area for safety.
- Pilot Confirmed Dead: The Indian Air Force (IAF) confirmed the pilot sustained fatal injuries in the accident. The UAE Ministry of Defence and the Dubai Media Office also issued statements confirming the tragic death.
Official Response and Investigation
The focus has now shifted to determining the cause of the catastrophic failure.
- Inquiry Ordered: The Indian Air Force has constituted a Court of Inquiry to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
- Controversy Preceding the Crash: The crash follows an incident just a day earlier where India’s Ministry of Defence had to publicly reject social media claims of an “oil leakage” from a Tejas jet on display, calling the claims “false propaganda” and clarifying that the observed fluid was only routine condensed water drainage common in humid conditions like Dubai. It is unclear if the aircraft involved in the crash was the same one previously subject to these rumours.
Airshow Concludes After Pause
Following the necessary emergency operations and an hour-long pause, the air show’s flying display eventually resumed around 3:40 PM GST.
The event ultimately concluded with a spectacular performance by the UAE’s own aerobatic team, Al Fursan, whose precision display provided a poignant close to the show’s final day, despite most of the remaining scheduled aircraft staying grounded out of caution.
The biennial Dubai Airshow, which ran from November 17 to 21, is one of the world’s most significant platforms for aerospace and defence deals, with this edition marking major orders from Emirates and FlyDubai. Its closing day will now be remembered for this tragic loss.
